Wounded Officer Fired Back in Accidental Shooting
Multiple shots were fired during the incident in which a Baltimore County police officer accidentally shot a Baltimore City officer in the arm. Investigators report that the wounded officer may have shot back, believing he was a target.
A Baltimore City police officer who was accidentally shot in the arm by another officer on Monday may have instinctively fired several rounds in response, investigators said.
The Anne Arundel County Police Department, which is handling the investigation of the incident at 144 Pincove Drive in Odenton, reiterated in a press release that a Baltimore officer was shot in the arm by a Baltimore County police officer whose gun discharged accidentally while at the house to serve a narcotics warrant. The city officer was hospitalized but his life was not in danger.
Investigators revealed Tuesday that the wounded officer fired back after he was shot, unaware that the first bullet had discharged accidentally from the other officer.
"Preliminarily, the investigation would indicate the Baltimore Police Department detective fired several rounds in response to the perceived threat," the press release stated.
The county officer whose weapon discharged originally was not hurt in the incident. Police said the case remains under investigation, but is still being treated as an accidental weapons discharge.
The Baltimore County officer has been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the completion of the investigation.
WJZ-TV reported that there were at least five bullet holes found inside the house.
The officers involved were part of a special task force serving a narcotics warrant. The task force had already detained a Columbia man in connection to the warrant, and he was not involved in the shooting.
Police offered new information on the man charged. Vernon Andre Jackson, 38, of Columbia, was charged with possession of marijuana and intent to distribute. Officers said he was carrying 27 pounds of the drug with a street value of $244,944, along with $1,384 in cash. They also seized a 2006 Infiniti.
