Fort Meade's Fire Dog Runs Off, Is Found

The mascot for the Fort Meade Fire Department was spooked by Wednesday night's fireworks and ran off. He was found Thursday morning.

The Fort Meade Fire Department's canine mascot, Bo, ran off Wednesday after the fireworks show and was missing for nearly 15 hours.

The fire department spent the night searching for the young German Shepherd and Labrador Retriever mix, who took over as the department's mascot last fall.

Capt. John Trottman of the Fort Meade Fire Department said they found Bo (alternatively spelled "Beau") outside the installation gates shortly before 1 p.m.

According to Fort Meade's Facebook page, Bo bolted from the fire station and was seen exiting the Mapes Road and Highway 32 gate.

Glad he's back! This could have been tragic! Why was he not properly secured in a safe place? It isn't like they didn't know that fireworks would be going off a block away...
Lack of advance planning NEARLY led to tragedy! These guys are emergency management professionals. They should know better!

Fireworks are horrible for a lot of animals...I think we should reconsider whether we REALLY need them!! Bo is gorgeous, though, even though I think German Shepherd mix is a euphemism for Pit Bull Mix - I work at an Animal Hospital and we get that a lot (don't get me wrong, though, I love pits and they are generally great dogs!!)

Not only are they tortuous for animals, but also for PTSD victims and those with panic/anxiety disorders. Even babies are adversely affected by the noise.
And they cannot be good for anyone's ears!

You are totally right - I never thought of that!!! Plus, it's a big waste of money that's much more needed in other areas...

I wrapped
my German Shorthaired dog in a blanket and surrounded her with pillows during the Ft. Mead fireworks....it helped! Hard to believe they weren't prepared to safely secure him....shame, shame on them.
