Five Things We Love About Exam Week

It's test-taking time at area schools. Sharpen your pencils.

Today's snow may have given students a short reprieve, but it’s still exam week at Anne Arundel County Public Schools as students wrap up the second marking period. Many students will experience additional fun by taking the SATs on Saturday.

For today’s Daily List, we decided to offer five of our favorite things about exams.

Multiple Choice Questions – The good news is that Regis Philbin is not there to ask whether it’s your “final answer.” The bad news is that you have no lifelines. You have a one in five chance of guessing the correct answer, and those aren’t great odds.

Analogies – Barack Obama is to “Yes we can” as Arundel High Principal Sharon Stratton is to [blank].

The correct answer is: “You darn well better, or your Wildcat Hour will be spent in my office.”

Pressure – Mom and Dad think you’re Ivy League material, and that’s great. But those acceptance letters from Yale and Harvard aren’t coming unless you can nail down at least a 1380. Good thing you have MIT as your safety school.

No. 2 Pencils – According to an article on ehow.com, “Number 2 pencils are more widely used in schools and workplaces because their levels of darkness and softness make them a good choice for regular, everyday use.” Indeed, there’s just something perfect about the good ol’ No. 2. Not too hard, not too soft, a perfect instrument for filling in those little bubbles. Of course, if you didn’t study, there’s not much the pencil can do for you.

Essays – We know it’s hard to put pen to paper when 90 percent of your written communication has been crafted into text messages. But deep down, you’ve been yearning to crank out six solid pages–front and back–about the causes and effects of the Civil War. Go for it!
