Five Odenton Day Shout Outs

In Tuesday's Tip List, we give a nod to those who helped make Odenton Day happen.

It's been said that only 5 percent of people are active in their communities. The remaining 95 percent are content to reap the benefits. That may or may not be true in Odenton, but it's clear that the 4th Annual Odenton Day would not have happened without the hard work of a relatively small group of people. We present to you five people and groups who helped make Odenton Day happen.

Bruce McPherson - This is the guy who does publicity for the Greater Odenton Improvement Association, and he did most of the heavy lifting as chairman of Odenton Day. Without him, the event might have been lost in the shuffle of the many other fall events.

Joe Gorman - The GOIA president was out there early, helping set up and organize the 5k race from the MARC station. Under his leadership, he has worked to may GOIA more community-focused and it paid off with a good day.

Troy Odendahl - Odenton Day took place at the Odenton Volunteer Fire Company. Who is president of that company? Odendahl is. He and his company have won a ton of awards for their work in keeping us safe, and the OVFC hall has become the go-to place for any type of community event. The OVFC Ladies' Auxiliary also deserves a nod.

Odenton Heritage Foundation - The town's historic preservationists took advantage of Odenton Day by holding an open house and allowing people inside the old Masonic Hall and Bethel Church. It was a nice addition to the day, for those interested in the town's rich roots.

The Community - Odenton Day organizers managed to sell out every table in the OVFC hall. That means there was a good response from the many community groups in the area. Nearly every volunteer service organization had a table there, along with many churches. The presence of Dunkin' Donuts with their free "munchkins" was a nice plus.

I concur with your assessment of the great work by such a few hard working community-minded folks. I always wished that more people would help with community activities so that everyone can enjoy the benefits. Cheers, Karen & Art Huseonica
