Community Comes Through for Displaced Family

Neighbors have been collecting clothing and money for a family of six left homeless by fire. The family said it no longer needs clothes, but could use shoes.

Members of the Odenton community responded this week to aid a family displaced by a fire in their home.

Nube and Salomon Martinez and their four children told neighbors that they are no longer in need of clothing donations, but would accept shoes and other household items.

"At this time the family would like to send their THANKS for all the donations!" neighbor Cynthia Bergman wrote. "They have asked to hold off on any other clothes donations. They are still in need of shoes though. Thank you all for your support at this time."

The family hoped to find a new house either this weekend or Monday, neighbor  Bergman said.

The house on Rita Drive was gutted by a fire that appeared to start in the basement Wednesday morning. Fire officials spent most of the afternoon trying to put it out, and the cause is still under investigation.

No one was injured in the blaze, but many of the Martinez family's belongings were lost in the fire.

In addition to donating shoes and household goods, people can donate money to the family through a special bank account.

Checks can be made out to “Rita Drive Fire Fund” Account# 9855038296 at M&T Bank. The checks should be sent to Edward Wetherbee Jr. at 534 Rita Dr. Odenton, MD 21113.

Wetherbee can also be contacted by phone at (443) 558-6409 or by email at ewetherbee@comcast.net.

Neighbors said the girls enjoy playing with Hello Kitty, i-Carly and Barbie toys.

The family also has two dogs, and neighbors said they enjoy eating bacon strips.

Those wishing to help can contact Cynthia Bergman at j_nelbergman@yahoo.com. She will reply with a drop off or pickup time and location.

The National Junior Honor Society at Arundel Middle School has also offered to collect items and raise money.

The family provided these sizes for clothing, but said to hold off on clothing donations for now.

I read on another news site that there are actually 9 people misplaced due to this fire. Apparently there were 2 families living in that house. Do we know if there were other children?

Along with people helping, I'm sure local businesses would want to help. For example, someone should contact our new Target - I'd be willing to bet they'd offer gift cards. Such requests, however, need to come from community leaders.

That is kind of rude to assume they are illegal just because they are Hispanic. It was two adults and four kids. I know MANY white and black family living the same way.

I really think the the comment made by DD is uncalled for. This is a matter of a family who has lost everything and could have been injured and or killed by a fire in their home..You should really thank god they are ok instead of asking if they are Legal to be here! Have a heart!

At AMS we are also collecting money, clothes and other household items that they may have. If you would like to make a donation, please take a check addressed to AMS to the main office and ask for it to be placed in Zachary Jones' mailbox. We will send a lump check after donations have been collected.

This family has been long time clients at Odenton Vet Hospital. We have taken up a collection also and an employee is going to keep their pets until they get settled. Mary Groven at First Choice Realty is working with their insurance company to get them into a temp house ASAP. It's wonderful how the community is pulling together to help this family.
