When the Severna Park varsity field hockey lost the first game of the season to Broadneck on Sept. 4, coach Ann Andrews said the team failed to score on—or even get shots off—on corner opportunities.
The Falcons got their fair share of corners on Tuesday—18 total—and they certainly got their shots off. They just found the pads of the Arundel goalie Shannon Davis., who recorded 14 saves in the outing.
After being tied 1-1 for most of the game, Severna Park finally found the goal on a corner with five minutes left in the game to take the lead. The Falcons defeated Arundel 2-1 Tuesday night in Severna Park.
“This game we were at least getting our shots off,” Andrews said. “The problem with Broadneck is we weren’t even getting shots off. Here we were, but the problem was their goalie and their defense played great. The goalie especially, she was moving a lot and had a great game. It just made it hard to get the ball past that line.”
After going into halftime tied 1-1, Severna Park dominated the second half. The team had 9 corners, but consistently seemed to find Davis’ pads instead of the goal.
The Falcons saw a relentless offensive performance from senior Adley Beairsto who consistently took balls down the field to create offensive opportunities.
With 11:52 to go, Beairsto to got a breakaway down the field only to run into an Arundel defender and lose the ball.
“She comes out so strong,” Andrews said. “She comes out of nowhere. Her speed is deceiving. When you first look at her you’re like “Oh,” then all of a sudden she is just there. She works very hard so it is rewarding when she scores.”
Beairsto’s hard work paid off with five minutes to go during the team’s final corner. She and Taylor Anspach found their way behind Davis and after a pass from Anspach on the goal line Beairsto was able to score.
“We just really needed to get it in and we finally did,” Beairsto said. “I think pretty much everyone touched it. It kind of bounced off Taylor’s stick and I was able to hit it in the goal.”
