Committee To Review Redistricting Options in Crofton

An organizational meeting will be held next week. The group also could discuss plans for the proposed elementary school to serve the Two Rivers development.

A special committee on Monday will begin reviewing options to alleviate overcrowding at schools in Crofton, and will also examine the potential boundaries of a proposed new elementary school.

The committee, which will include parents, school officials and community leaders, will look at redistricting options involving Nantucket, Crofton, Crofton Meadows, and Crofton Woods elementary schools, as well as their feeder schools.

The committee also will examine the proposed "Evergreen Elementary School," which developers have offered to build in order to expand school capacity in west Anne Arundel County.

The first meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at Nantucket Elementary School. The committee also is scheduled to meet on the following dates:

  • Oct. 2 at Crofton Middle School
  • Oct. 9 at Crofton Meadows Elementary
  • Oct. 16 at Crofton Elementary
  • Oct. 23 at Crofton Woods Elementary
  • Oct. 30 at Crofton Meadows Elementary

Hold the phone - the proposed Evergreen Elementary school is a long way from happening. The proposed road cut through GORC park and the connection to Strawberry Lake Way is controversial.

Telling the parents of Crofton students that they can count on the construction of this Evergreen (Two Rivers) Elementary to relieve capacity problems today seems more like spin than planning.

When I received the daily patch email, I thought this article would be about the Congressional redistricting plan on the Md. Ballot come Nov. 6th. to alert or inform people of what is goin on in our state and how it affect Anne Arundel Counties gerrymandered districts.

Dave this is how they work, try and put a smile on parents faces by telling them "we're redistricting you now, but just wait because when the shiny new Evergreen opens up you'll get to go there"

The school board is sneaky, developers are sneaky and a group of parents who get involved in redistricting are sneaky because at the end of the day they really only care about their kid and where that kid goes to school

Yeah, that's my point, I think they are selling something half-baked. "Oh, don't worry about capacity because we will be opening a new school soon right across MD3!"

The School Board doesn't care though - they are appointed, not elected. Thus, apparently all of the politically risky decisions are made by them. Why bother voting for a County Executive when his or her decisions are rendered moot by whatever the appointees on the AA County School Board want?

Can we talk about our kids at Crofton Middle all going to the same high school instead of splitting them up?
