Atlanta Bread at Waugh Chapel Closed for Business
The locally owned franchise unexpectedly closed down for good this week.
Residents looking to grab a morning coffee or sandwich for lunch at the Village at Waugh Chapel will be disappointed to learn the Atlanta Bread Company located there unexpectedly closed their doors for good this week.
When contacted, corporate Vice President for Marketing at Atlanta Bread Chris Campagna did not comment on the reason for the store’s sudden closing, but confirmed that it was not a company-owned store.
Campagna also said in an email that they were still “heavily invested the state” of Maryland, with two company-owned stores operating in Greenbelt and in Severna Park.
“The past two years have been ones of solid overall success for our concept, in fact we have had positive same store sales comps for 10 straight quarters, and we feel we are positioned superbly for future growth and success, both in Maryland and throughout the U.S,” wrote Campagna in an email.
The owner of the Atlanta Bread in Gambrills could not be reached for comment.
In June 2011, the Atlanta Bread in Severna Park also closed unexpectedly and the fixtures, furniture, kitchen and cafe equipment showed up in an online auction. However, that location reopened in August 2011 under corporate ownership instead of a franchise and remains open.

Not surprised, they always had terrible service and often were out of several items. With the new Panera close by, they did not stand a chance!

I did not care much for the food and the place always smelled like burnt cheese. Glad to see Panera.

I agree Kim. They were slow and didn't "get it".....they couldn't even figure out how to efficiency move a line of a few people through. They are all scared in that Shopping Center and we will see if Safeway survives.

I told my wife as soon as I heard panera bread was on board that it was gonna close. The floor always had food all over it, just couldn't eat my food in a dirty place. feel bad for the local owner.

It was a nice place and I enjoyed going there. Sorry to see any business go out of business. Maybe we can get an adult bookstore to open up there.

About time. This place was horrible. Why would anyone go anywhere else than Caribou for their morning cup of joe with great service..

I went there once, and although the food was fine (not incredible, just adequate), I remember how I was struck by, and commented to my companion about, the cleanliness, or lack thereof.
The drink prep area was a mess, with straw wrappers, lids, and beverage spillage all over. The trash cans were overflowing, and some tables were not bussed, floor needed sweeping, yet employees were gathered around talking amongst themselves.

I hate to see empty storefronts, it tends to be contagious. Hopefully there will be someone interested in the Atlanta Bread Co, and the two other empty storefronts in our Village shopping area. I look foreward to Waugh Chapel South with its new offerings, but I don't want to loose what we already have in the Village!

The owner operator of the Crofton Atlanta Bread was a JERK!! Didn't care at all about his customers and was a total bird brain. I was in there one time and saw a customer come in with an Atlanta Bread coupon for a buy-one-get-one-free sandwich that HAD THE CROFTON STORE'S ADDRESS ON IT, and the moron owner fought with the customer that he would not accept it because it wasn't his coupon (even though his store was on it). He got in a fight with this poor person over a sandwich. I'll never forget seeing that and how horribly he treated this customer.

You all think this is a wonderful transition… but no one seems to realize the domino effect that has been going on in this area for a couple of years now, and is just now starting to pick up its pace. Someone comes up with a “great idea” that will "provide more jobs" except the only problem is, that while they're creating these new work places.. They are also eliminating jobs in the same area. It's like building a Cold Stone Creamery next to a Dairy Queen… there is no logic behind it; you're screwing over your own people.

This place closed because of the new Panera across the street in the same shopping complex, but that's not the only problem. They have created a supersized Wegmans next to our Safeway, which has adequately provided for us for so long… ripping down all the green area we even had. It’s a scary reminder of what happened to the Wal-Mart in Glen Burnie. The store has been shut down for years in what is now a near abandoned parking lot, ever since the Super Wal-Mart went up off of Quarterfield Road. Does anyone even remember? Will you remember these shopping centers when they are eventually run down as well? Or will it just be as simple as saying “on to the next one”?

Do you remember when we were promised better traffic flow and less jams? Well the troubling Michigan U-Turns have proved those "promises" to be empty, with the volume of traffic heavily increasing ever since. It will only keep growing. Did you know that the long time residents on the original fields of Dairy Farm were moved out of their homes to have them torn down, only to make room on that same plot of land for town homes and apartments? How is it that we'll accommodate any new form of building to anyone who wants in, but we are willing to kick out those who have been living here their entire lives while doing so?

Those ordering and managing this construction can feel satisfied by the temporary jobs they’ve created for themselves, to temporarily fill their pocketbooks, but the land that they destroy is permanent and will only feed into future projects that eventually, will take over all that is left here. Believe me, they will keep on building... many construction workers aren’t even local residents, it’s not their home they're destroying so there is nothing stopping them from continuing to build… it’s simply "not their problem". We need to open our eyes… it’s not Rocket Science. Major construction, development and expansion will naturally accommodate and invite in larger populations. That’s just common sense.

This area used to be ranked as the top 100 places to live in the United States, and for good reasons… however I'm not surprised that it has since been removed from that list. I'm ashamed of what has been done. I’ve lived here my entire life and it was beautiful, every day I watch it slowly slipping away. It's only a matter of time now before we’re covered in asphalt, parking lots, and the ever-expanding route three turns into a full-blown major highway. It is no exaggeration, it is the path we are on and the path we will continue down. We are accommodating traffic jams and chaos, to the growing construction around us, which is ironically, the true deconstruction of our home. Enjoy your new shopping center for now… but it is only a matter of time before someone else comes up with a "great idea".

I can't believe I forgot to mention the new casino.. and plans for a new one... the overtaking of Odenton with the new apartment complexes... the largely unfunded highway expansions taking place... which are left to sit unfinished due to the giant lack of money. I could go on and on... still, it is all too clear that more problems have been created than solutions.

Hey Candace - so I'm guessing we won't be seeing you at any of the stores, restaurants, or service providers in the new shopping center, right?? You keep on trekking to Bowie or Annapolis for all of your needs.

That wasn't my argument, please read thoroughly next time. Though since the convenience is there (target and yolavie!) which I love, my complaint is the over the top constant building and expansion, as well as doubling of stores.. This is bank next to bank, Safeway next to wegmans, etc, etc, screwing over your own people. But I wouldn't expect you to get it.. Lets just wait it out a couple of years and see how much more development we can pack in. Even still, you may not get it.
