Waugh Chapel Students Raise More than $3,000 for Heart Health
Students at Waugh Chapel Elementary School raised $3,172 for the American Heart Association, just by playing basketball and jumping rope.
All students collected pledges and then took part in jump rope skills during physical education classes as part of the Jump Rope for Heart program. Students in grades 3 through 5 also learned basketball skills during class as part of Hoop for Heart.
Fifth-grader Ashley McNaughton was the top fundraiser, collecting $285.
Waugh Chapel Elementary physical education teacher Karen Webster said the effort was one of a broad array of programs designed to keep kids at the school active. For the last two years, students have taken part in the NFL Play 60 program, which encourages kids to be active for at least 60 minutes a day.
Webster said students have also learned about nutrition labels and about the sugar and fat content in foods.
